Free rides over, but UD keeps escorts

"To decrease wait times and abuses of the service, the University of
Delaware will no longer use cars to transport students and faculty
members who call for free safety escorts."

"Instead, beginning March 15, employees from the school's Public Safety
Department will respond to calls on foot or bicycle and walk the caller
to the nearest bus stop. The escort will wait with the caller until the
bus arrives and, if needed, ride along until he or she reaches a final
destination..."

"The escort service 'just became a very convenient method of
transportation and it was just overextending our resources both in
personnel and the phone lines,' Homiak said. 'We don't want to be part
of irresponsible behavior by transporting students from one social event
to maybe another social event. We want to focus on providing better
service and providing it to those who truly need the service...'"
