THIS WEEK! U.S. Department of Education's OSDFS Releases "Action Guide
for Emergency Management at Institutions of Higher Education"
The following feature has been added to the This Week! section of the
Center's Web site:
The U.S. Department of Education's (ED's) Office of Safe and Drug-Free
Schools (OSDFS), in collaboration with ED's Readiness and Emergency
Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance Center (TA Center),
is pleased to announce the release of the "Action Guide for Emergency
Management at Institutions of Higher Education."
The "Action Guide" aims to offer institutions of higher education a
useful resource in the field of emergency management. It is intended to
serve as a resource for all types of institutions of higher education.

The Higher Education Center is pleased to make the following
announcements:
1) Campus Mental Health Action Planning Webinar
The Jed Foundation and Education Development Center, Inc., invite
stakeholders in the health and wellness of their student bodies to
participate in the CampusMHAP (Mental Health Action Planning) Webinar
Thursday, February 26, 2009, 2:30-4:00 p.m., EST. There is no
registration fee required.
This Webinar will focus on selecting and developing campus practices
that are most likely to decrease mental health problems, suicidal
behavior, and suicide as well as promote mental health and wellness.
Participants will learn how to:
Develop a comprehensive, multi-strategy approach to mental health
promotion and suicide prevention
Choose "best practices" that are evidence-, theory- or logic-based
Use a logic model to test assumptions about behavior and systems changes
that are expected from program implementation

2) Stop the Hate Train The Trainer: West Coast
Stop the Hate is hosting the West Coast Stop The Hate Train The Trainer
Special 10 Year Observance, "Remembering the Legacy of Matthew Shepard,"
at The Police Academy Building at Napa Valley College, in Napa,
California, April 14-16, 2009. The registration fee is $395 on or before
March 16, 2009, and $495 after that date.
The Train The Trainer program allows top administrators, student affairs
professionals, faculty and students to learn new innovative tools to
take action on hate crimes and bias-motivated violence issues on his/her
campus and region.

Recently Published Research: January 2009
The Higher Education Center compiles citations to a selection of
recently published research in alcohol, other drugs, and violence (AODV)
prevention and intervention. The citations and abstracts are compiled
and posted in monthly intervals and are listed alphabetically by author.
This brief literature search captures citations relevant to campus-based
AODV prevention programs, with a special focus on research detailing the
scope of the problem and identifying promising strategies and
interventions.
