UI taps into booze-free evenings
Press-Citizen (IA) February 8, 2009
By Brian Morelli
"Recently, UI allocated $50,000 to support late night alcohol-free
activities. Students pitch the idea, and if approved, UI funds it. The
catch is this: The activities can start no earlier than 10 p.m. and end
no earlier than 1 a.m. on Thursday, Friday or Saturday night."
"'Fewer students, drinking on fewer nights and drinking less when they
do,' said Tom Rocklin, UI interim vice president for student services,
about UI's goal. 'It is important to have a lively night life that
doesn't have alcohol.'"
"This is good news for some students who don't necessarily want to drink
but often do so because that's where friends are hanging out."
