1) NATIONAL MEETING REGISTRATION STILL AVAILABLE
Registration is still available for the U.S. Department of Education's
21st Annual National Meeting on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and
Violence Prevention in Higher Education on October 18-21, 2007, at the
DoubleTree Hotel and Executive Meeting Center in Omaha, Nebraska. To

This is the national conference for examining issues around alcohol,
other drugs, and violence on college campuses and in their surrounding
communities. It is also an opportunity to be part of the largest annual
gathering of alcohol and other drug abuse and violence prevention
professionals working with college populations.

2) NATIONAL MEETING TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE SESSIONS AVAILABLE
Staff from the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse
and Violence Prevention will be providing brief, individual information
and assistance sessions at the 21st Annual National Meeting on Alcohol
and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention in Higher Education. Topics
of assistance relate to every stage of alcohol, other drugs, and
violence (AODV) prevention program planning, ranging from problem
identification and strategic planning to evaluation to fine-tuning your
existing AODV programming on campus and in the community.
To request an appointment for assistance, please send an e-mail to
Kellie Anderson (kanderson_at_edc.org) prior to Tuesday, October 16. Please
include the following in your request:
-the nature of your question (please be specific)
-your affiliation (organization, institution) and title
-your availability for each day (Friday, Saturday) and time slot
(8:30, 8:50, 9:15, 9:35)
-your e-mail address or preferred method of contact prior to the
meeting
-the hotel where you are staying in Omaha (in case we need to
contact you after your arrival)
Based on the nature of your request and staff availability, we will
assign you to a Center staff member and will notify you of your
appointment.
3) NASPA & ASJA WEBINAR: RESPONDING TO TROUBLED AND AT-RISK STUDENTS
The National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and
Association for Student Judicial Affairs are hosting an online Webinar,
"Responding to Troubled and At-Risk Students," October 9, 2007,
1:30-3:00 P.M. (Eastern). The registration fee starts at $225 for
non-members and non-students.
The program is designed to provide an overview of best practices in
threat assessment and teaching and responding to troubled students,
along with law and policy guidance on relevant federal laws (FERPA and
the ADA), and on the importance of avoiding harmful stereotyping and
profiling. The program will incorporate the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign's model as a lens to frame the discussion, and explore
innovative practices in responding to potentially violent students.

4) 2007 SPIRIT OF SAFETY CONFERENCE
The College of Lifelong Learning at Jackson State University is hosting
the 2007 Spirit of Safety (S.O.S.) Conference November 14-16, 2007, at
the Hilton Hotel & Convention Center in Jackson, MS. The registration
fee starts at $85 for non-students.
The S.O.S. Conference was designed to share information on violence
prevention, intervention, and supervention in schools, colleges, and
universities. The conference goals are to help educators, counselors,
school administrators, school security officers, and law enforcement,
develop positive character and behaviors in youths for a violence-free
world and to improve responses to violence should it occur.
