The Higher Education Center is pleased to make the following
announcements:

1) NEW NIAAA PUBLICATION

Helping Patients with Alcohol Problems: A Health Practitioner's Guide

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), in
collaboration with the American Medical Association, is now offering the
Helping Patients with Alcohol Problems: A Health Practitioner's Guide. The
NIAAA this week is mailing the Guide to 40,000 primary care physician
members of the AMA.

This user-friendly, research-based, comprehensive tool is designed to help
primary care practitioners assist patients who are risky drinkers. A small
pocket guide, complete with a standard drink chart, accompanies each
22-page brochure.

<p>2) CAMY'S REPORT ON STATE-BY-STATE ALCOHOL ADVERTISING LAWS NOW ONLINE

The appeal of alcohol to underage youth can be limited by reducing youth
exposure to alcohol advertising and marketing. The Center on Alcohol
Marketing and Youth recently released a report on the landscape of alcohol
advertising laws at the state level. This report undertakes the first
nationwide examination, state by state, of the existing tools state
officials have at their disposal to reduce youth exposure to alcohol
advertising and marketing.

<p>5) NETWORK REGIONAL COORDINATOR RENEE TWIGG HONORED

Renee Twigg, co-coordinator for the California-Hawaii-Marianas Islands
region of The Network: Addressing Collegiate Alcohol and Other Drug Issues
(www.edc.org/hec/network/), was the recipient, this week, of a Leadership Recognition Award from
the Los Angeles County of Health Services Alcohol and Drug Program
Administration.

Ms. Twigg, also the director of the California State University Long Beach
Student Health Services Center, was cited for her statewide and regional
leadership roles. She has been instrumental in California State University
systemwide alcohol policy development and implementation leading to the
California Alcohol Issues Partnership
(www.atc.ucsd.edu/hec/CAIP/index.htm) -- now including six California state government agencies and the
University of California system ? as well as growth of Network membership
within the region. Ms. Twigg is also a member of the California Prevention
Collaborative, a statewide amalgam of health and safety interests.

Renee Twigg is a registered nurse and administrator. Her CSULB health
center, this month, will receive an additional three year accreditation
from the Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. She is also an
associate of the U.S. Department of Education's Higher Education Center
for Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention.

<p>6) NEW "GREENHOUSE" PROGRAM TRAINING AND TA

Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) has developed a
"Greenhouse Program" through its National Community Anti-Drug Coalition
Institute to improve the effectiveness of new and ongoing community
coalitions. The Greenhouse is a training initiative that will help local
groups develop effective anti-drug coalitions by giving up to 30
communities with newly developing coalitions (maximum one year since
inception) an opportunity to explore and learn what makes community
coalitions successful in achieving measurable results.
