2) White House Offers Media Match for Public Service Ads

The Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) (
http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.gov/) Youth Anti-Drug Media campaign is a
five-year media effort to educate and enable youth to reject illicit drugs.
The campaign, which is designed to leverage federal funding by requesting a
pro bono match of media time, will target children ages 9-18 as well as the
adults who influence them. ONDCP purchases advertising time from media
outlets - these companies are then asked to match the government's buy with
an equivalent value in public service. The majority of those donations must
be met with public service time or space. This donated time and space is
divided amongst pre-approved organizations whose programs are consistent
with and support ONDCP's youth drug prevention strategy. Eligible
organizations/programs are those that aid in drug abuse prevention by
encouraging activities such as mentoring, greater parental involvement,
after-school programs, raising young people's self-esteem, and other
nationally relevant issues such as underage drinking and juvenile crime.

3) Parenting is Prevention

A variety of caregivers, like parents, grandparents, foster parents,
coaches, and mentors, have a tremendous impact on youth actions and
choices. And this month, SAMHSA's National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and
Drug Information (NCADI), commends those caregivers and invites them to
support the Parenting is Prevention Web site at
http://www.parentingisprevention.org/.

Parenting is Prevention-a site dedicated to parents who want to keep their
children drug-free offers information and tips concerning substance abuse
prevention, publications, weekly updates, and resource links to various
substance abuse prevention agencies.

In addition, during the month of June, SAMHSA's NCADI is offering a FREE
Parenting is Prevention Kit which includes library searches, publications
in both English and Spanish, and a listing of featured videos available for
purchase.

HECNews is a conduit for all press coverage related to alcohol,
other drugs (AOD), and violence at U.S. colleges and universities.
Negative news coverage of these issues is pervasive and may serve to
reinforce exaggerated misperceptions of actual substance use norms.

Our awareness of this news coverage should strengthen our resolve not
only to address AOD problems on campus, but also to advocate for news
coverage that draws public attention to the responsible majority of
college students.

Other Drug Prevention (HEC), Contract No. ED-99-CO-0094 of the U.S.
