Visit this like to (I think) an interesting news report from today's JoinTogether.org new service. In the article, research correlating student substance use with academic performance is highlighted.

Although I have not read the research--and therefore must be careful before drawing conclusions and commenting in any detail--it does seem that it will be easy for those exposed to the media reports "about the research" may be inclined to draw the conclusion that "grades" cause/prevent substance use. This propensity to confuse correlation with causation is no small problem, especially when we attempt to impress senior administrators and parents with why certain interventions and programs should and should not be employed and they "know otherwise" because they "watched the six-o'clock news or read something in the paper."

I am curious what others on the list may think.

Best regards,
Robert
