The table on the hotlink provides useful information. Mr. Healy
described the programs as assessment tools, but these are
interventions that include pre- and post- assessments and several have
provided data for their effectiveness for reduction of drinking and/or
consequences. BUT, as I recall from the National Meeting, these were
combined with other environmental measures not listed in the table.

With regards to assessment instruments,I have used mail-back, e-mail
with hotlink to Internet survey and in-classroom distribution and
collection of survey instruments. Only the latter has yielded
demographics that match my institution...and much higher rates of
drinking and risky drinking than other survey methods.

I have gone through one program that occupied me for more than two
hours before I quit and was no where near finished. I don't think any
student would last that long. If you cannot impart the information
you want in 30 min in one of these programs, forget capturing the
attention of your students.

I have gone with all three of my children to orientations. Two
returned with a large plastic bag full of stuff that included student
disciplinary code, AOD info and all kinds of materials about the
university. They sorted through, pulled out the coupons and discount
cards, and hung the bag on their closet door knob. A couple of months
later I tossed the bag. When I looked at the mass of material, boring
stuff, I thought that theirs was a sane response to an insane
expectation by the university. My daughter went to a small
institution, 500+ students, and the orientation was mostly a series of
interactive activities with students, only the parents got lectures.
She might have actually gotten something out of that one.

My institution starts with AOD messages in orientation, 30 min.
session mostly with students, letters about parental notification, and
then a string of AOD programming in freshmen classes, plus a safe ride
program, 21st B'day card, and so on. The three worst bars next to
campus have closed, one named me in their suit over the denial of
renewed permit, and enforcement is high. My surveys show absollutely
no change in alcohol abuse. The thanks for my work: the task force
was disbanded by the new Provost.

The core problem of course is that our students come to us already
drinking and looking forward to being able to drink without shaping
their activities around the presence of their parents. The solution
lies in effective middle school programs that carry over into high
school, it's already too late when they get to college. Bob has
repeatedly described the expectations towards alcohol of freshmen
versus seniors.

To all, good luck. I hope none of your ticking time bombs go off this year.
