MetLife Foundation Renews Funding For
National College Alcohol Abuse Prevention Campaign
New York, NY (May 8, 2001) - Facts on Tap, the nation's premier college
alcohol abuse prevention campaign, today announced it will continue and
expand its programming with the support of MetLife Foundation's renewal of a
three-year $300,000 grant to the campaign.
“Facts on Tap has gained both momentum and acclaim in colleges and homes
throughout the country,” said Mitchell S. Rosenthal, M.D., president of
Phoenix House, which administers Facts on Tap through its prevention
affiliates, the American Council for Drug Education (ACDE) and the Children
of Alcoholics Foundation (COAF). “MetLife Foundation's support has allowed
us to establish working relationships with more than 600 colleges and
universities. Educators, students, parents, and prevention professionals
now rely on us for the most up-to-date, reliable information and preventive
measures on college drinking.”
“We look forward to building on the extensive progress made by the Facts on
Tap program over the last few years,” said Sibyl Jacobson, President and CEO
of MetLife Foundation. “Addressing the issue of college drinking remains a
critical need, and through the program, colleges and universities will have
the resources to educate students about the dangers of excessive drinking.”
More than 160,000 of today's first-year college students will drop out of
school next year for alcohol or other drug-related reasons. Using awareness
materials, curriculums for professionals, and outstanding technical
assistance and training, Facts on Tap helps students cope with alcohol and
student life, recognize the signs of alcoholism in peers, and avoid risky
sexual behaviors.
The program's graphically provocative materials and website
(www.factsontap.org ) make it a favorite with students. Prevention
professionals utilize Facts on Tap for its hard-hitting information and
comprehensive training programs that help university staff, student leaders,
and peer educators foster a healthy social climate.

Facts on Tap addresses students at all risk levels on campus, including the
general student population, students who are children of alcoholics, and
those who already have a drinking problem. Facts on Tap's 2001 campaign
will also focus on the effects of alcohol combined with drugs, including
club drugs, marijuana, date rape drugs, cocaine, hallucinogens, and
prescription drugs.
Facts on Tap is administered by the American Council for Drug Education
(ACDE) and the Children of Alcoholics Foundation (COAF), the prevention
affiliates of Phoenix House. Phoenix House is the nation's leading provider
