Barry,
At the University of Nebraska, we are looking into reviving our Greek Task
Force. Ours is actually looking at reviving the Greek Accreditation process.
It was piloted in 1997-98, but was composed of community and campus
volunteer leaders who soon grew worn from dealing with resistance from the
National Offices and the reluctance of chapters to participate in the
accreditation process. It was not required by the University, so there was
no sanctions for not completing the accreditation process, and little
recognition for completing it. The other problem that we ran into was that
the only chapters participating in the accreditation process were the ones
who easily met the requirements, so we were not helping the chapters who
actually needed the help.
With recent attempts by many national chapters to improve the standards of
campus chapters, we thought that there might be a need for a campus
accreditation process. We are putting together a committee to review the
original work that was done. The committee will consist of Greek Affairs
staff members, student members of Greek chapters, and alum from both the
Lincoln community and the NU campus. The committee will review the
accreditation process as it was before, then make a recommendation to the
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The University is also looking to
review the approved housing status policy for our Greek chapters, so our
timing may work out very nicely.
I will send you a copy of the original accreditation plan developed by the
committee in 1995. Good luck!
