Corita - when I first read your note I gasped, out loud, fearing that I had
somehow shot myself in the foot. I went back to the original memo and
re-read it. I continue to have the same concerns as I believe the article
clearly speaks to "binge" rather than "high risk" drinking. Now, in
retrospect, my reference to the article's furthering the "pejorative"
aspect of the term binge drinking, that may have been a bit of over kill,
but I am still upset by the message, implied and implicit, in the article.

I believe the primer on alcohol and the body is quite good, but still, all
the references in the article refer to binge drinking. In particular, in
the first paragraphs, there is the clear impression given that the article
speaks to what most students are doing - case in point, "Binge drinking is
most common at colleges and universities, where many young adults treat
drinking to excess as a rite of passage." You know and I know what this is
saying, but the average lay person reads this and sees "all" or "most"
    college students engaging in "binges."

I hope that I have not become so jaded regarding the topic of 'binge
drinking" that I am setting myself up to see what I expect. If so, this is
one of the reasons I enjoy listservs so much as they serve to function as
a reality check for impassioned folks like myself ;o)

    best regards,
    Robert
